    Termite Mounds in East Arnhem
Acrylic, oil stick on Arches 300gsm paper, 77 x 110cm
In the dry season in Arnhem Land the ground is parched and arid, grasses are almost grey and the stunted trees reflect a dirty shade of brown. In amongst this landscape are the ubiquitous termite mounds reflecting and blending with this bleached landscape.
  • Julie Poulsen

    HIGHLY COMMENDED - $1,000 NON-ACQUISITIVE
    Small Cool Dip
House paint, mixed media on unprimed canvas, 125 x 150cm
Landscape is a composite. The broad backdrop anchors place and merges with the changing foreground. Cairns, my home, a slim coastal band of tropical far north Queensland, with its familiar images of reef; of rainforest; of enchanting creeks; and raging waterfalls, is a mesmerising location. In stark contrast are the dry landscapes inland from Cairns. These regions are expansive and unruly with a constancy often misinterpreted as uninteresting. Looping through these harsh northern Australian landscapes there are hidden creeks with sandy bottoms and shady banks. On our road trips to Cooktown, numerous over forty years, we searched for new swimming spots. In Small Cool Dip I included a human element, an outlined prostrate figure centred bottom foreground, underlined in watery blue, an alien scrawl on the inland backdrop. This compelling fusion of breadth and intimacy in the landscape draws me in and is the driving force of my work.
  • Alice Xu

    HIGHLY COMMENDED - $1,000 NON-ACQUISITIVE
    The Devil's Hostel
    Oil on canvas, 92 x 121cm
A place where he freely lives and goes. An entity that visits and haunts us in the studios especially when we have hair-tearing frustrations and blocks in the art making process. The souls we have to sell, the dealings we have to make in pursuit of the mastery in our craft, every handshake is a return for just a passable brushstroke or epiphany. This work is about the struggles all artists face.
  • Anne-France Fulgence

    COMMENDED
    Bad Luck and Trouble
    Watercolour and acrylic paint, 122 x 112cm
The hunting dog is a confronting conundrum. Notorious for their fierce power, unyielding courage and the brutality that underpins their “sport”, they are the gladiators of the canine realm – yet still capable of unswerving obedience, profound loyalty, and a confounding calm. The challenge of capturing that seemingly antithetical blend on canvas has fascinated A-F Fulgence.
  • Sunjoo Heo

    COMMENDED
    9 to 5
    Oil on canvas, 50 x 61cm
I looked back my early stage of my life, and how my life has been shaped to come to this moment. Then, I started revisiting the memory of my first-year birthday ceremony (Dol-jab-i). As part of the first birthday ceremony in Korea, we set up the table and spread various symbolic items representing future careers, and predict their future by one or two of the items they grab.
It is quite fun and also very significantly symbolic because we all consider the job as a very important tool to make money for a living in the society. As we mostly work from 9 am to 5 pm to make a living with paying taxes, I wanted to depict this universal symbolic concept of “9 to 5” as common future for everyone no matter what you do for work for a very long time.
