IJLAL OLGUNER

Baby
Charcoal on paper 57 x 77cm $1600
Ijlal Olguner is an expressive figurative artist who uses a broad range of materials to build layers, make marks, and create texture. Her subjects range from the energy of animals to fashion’s oddities, humour, overconsumption, and the devastation of war. Drawing remains central, allowing her to capture emotional depth and vulnerability while exploring expression—from delight to devastation.Baby explores the movement of a young elephant, observing its off-kilter and unpractised motions. Using a variety of charcoal materials—from soft and hard sticks to charcoal powder applied with a makeup brush—Olguner makes marks ranging from soft to hard, playing between instinct, accident, and gentle control. She observes fleeting moments of the elephant’s movements, capturing its vitality, vulnerability, and the tender unpredictability of early life.
